OCTOBER'S News & Notes

A Message from Principal P

I can't believe it is already October!!! Our CMS staff and students have hit the ground running! I would be remiss if I did not take a moment to acknowledge the transition back to school full time during a pandemic brings with it challenges as well as anxiety for many of us in our community. I want to thank our amazing staff for welcoming our students back with enthusiasm and creating an environment that feels normal. Our students are resilient and it is so much fun to see them adjusting to being back full time so quickly and acting like middle school kids!

I want to start a new tradition with CMS families. You are invited for our first monthly "Conversation and Coffee with Principal P" on Monday, October 25th from 6:00-7:00 P.M. in the CMS library. I will be communicating through School Messenger a reminder as well as providing a virtual link to join. Our conversations  will be centered around specific topics related to education.

On October 25, I invite you to join in Conversations and Coffee with Principal P as a way to get to know me as well as provide me with some topics you feel are important and relevant to your students' education and future success. I will use your feedback to pick topics for our future conversations.

I will continue to communicate with families in my monthly newsletter as well as the use of School Messenger to communicate more immediate updates. Please know if you have questions you can email me or call me directly anytime.  Mr. Curtin and I embrace our mission of being better together and welcome open communication in order to achieve our mission.

Better Together,

Supporting Our Students

Below you will find information in regard to the many different ways we are supporting our CMS students' academic needs as well as their social and emotional needs.

Social Emotional Learning Supports

Promise Zone Student Engagement Specialist

Last year, county officials decided to make an investment in the social-emotional well-being of our students as they transitioned back to in-person instruction. Camillus Middle School is fortunate to have Frank Howard as our Promise Zone Student Engagement Specialist. Promise Zones’ vision is ” to increase the capacity and efficacy of service delivery to all students to ensure social, emotional, and academic achievement.”

School Counseling Office

We have an outstanding school counseling team.  Students are assigned a school counselor based on their last name.  Mrs. Melanie Lynch (A-F), Mrs. Devan Farrell (G-MO), and Mrs. Monica Canterino (Mu-Z). We are also fortunate to have Mrs. Kathleen Germain our school social worker and Rebecca Wood is our school psychologist .

 Academic Supports

We are currently looking at ways to provide additional academic support to students during the school day. Our goal is to ensure this support is accessible to all students, across all content areas.  Many staff members are finding creative and flexible ways to provide students with additional support during the school day.  We are also extremely fortunate to have intervention specialists for both Math and ELA. We will continue to work together to bring IT back to CMS.

Code of Conduct

In  September Mr. Curtin went into Social Studies classes and presented on our behavior expectations here at CMS. Here is a copy of the PowerPoint
